Pays-Bas : un scandale de binationaux secoue le football néerlandais
Dutch football is going through a period of great turbulence. The Eredivisie is currently at the heart of a legal imbroglio involving 25 dual-nationality players, whose administrative situation could have major consequences for the current season.
According to revelations on the podcast De Derde Helft, these players have renounced their Dutch nationality to represent other countries, including Suriname, Curaçao, and Indonesia. This choice now places them under the status of foreign players, requiring them to obtain a work permit to play in the Netherlands. The problem is that several of them are reportedly not complying with this requirement, jeopardizing their participation in numerous matches this season.
Dubbed "Paspoortgate," the affair erupted after publicly expressed doubts about the eligibility of certain players. The NAC Breda club, in particular, appealed to the relevant authorities. This action could set a precedent if successful.
The potential consequences are staggering: up to 133 matches could be replayed if appeals result in the invalidation of the affected games. This could plunge the championship into utter chaos and jeopardize its outcome.
Although the complaint was dismissed at first instance, an appeal is currently underway. Dutch football authorities are following the case with concern, aware that an unfavorable ruling could prevent the season from being completed and undermine the competition's credibility.
