CULTURE : Ce que prévoit le ministre Amadou Bâ pour développer ce secteur
During the celebration of the 11th edition of the Railway Festival (Festrail), held in Thiès from November 17 to 22, 2025, the Minister of Culture, Crafts, and Tourism announced the upcoming National Cultural Conference. Amadou Bâ promised cultural stakeholders that their status as artists would be respected through the development of cultural and creative industries. This would guarantee them contracts, reliable social security, health insurance, and a special supplementary pension.
"Culture does not feed the artist and art does not provide a living for its man in Senegal. Senegal is the only country of culture where an artist is forced to beg for medical treatment if he falls ill, due to a lack of resources," the minister stated.
For him, Senegal is certainly a great country of culture, but the legacy of the past has meant that it has not taken into account the developments in the sector.
Minister Amadou Bâ's ambition is to completely change the paradigms that support the cultural sector. "Artists have a completely artisanal status. In terms of infrastructure, there are almost no decent performance venues. Meanwhile, Senegalese artists shine internationally, winning awards all over the place, but struggle to be recognized in their own country," he lamented.
For Amadou Bâ, everything in this sector needs to be rebuilt. To this end, he announced the convening of the National Culture Conference to share his proposals with stakeholders. The aim is to create a credible ecosystem, economic model, and infrastructure that will boost the situation of artists and the Senegalese economy.
