Destruction d’une œuvre de Papa Ibra Tall à Thiès : Le ministre de la Culture dénonce une atteinte au patrimoine
The Minister of Culture, Crafts, and Tourism, Amadou Ba, expressed his outrage following the destruction of a mosaic artwork by master artist Papa Ibra Tall in Place de France, in the city of Thiès. The cultural authority considers this act a serious attack on the national artistic heritage. "I express my profound indignation at this act, which undermines the integrity of the artistic heritage and the legacy left by one of Senegal's most illustrious artists," reads a statement released on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The minister stated that this work, created by "an emblematic figure and pioneer of modern Senegalese art," Master Papa Ibra Tall, "constitutes a major element of the national artistic heritage and a precious testimony to our country's cultural memory." In this regard, the minister announced that he has contacted the Thiès municipality to "request all relevant information regarding the reasons, circumstances, and decision-making process that led to the destruction of the artwork," he specified.
Furthermore, Amadou Ba insists that "the preservation of works of art in public spaces is a collective responsibility, particularly of public authorities," recalling that this mission is part of "the principles of safeguarding, transmitting and promoting our cultural heritage."
Amadou Ba finally recalls that "any intervention affecting a work of art or a cultural asset, particularly in public spaces, must imperatively be carried out in compliance with the laws in force and in consultation with the competent state services", thus reaffirming the need for rigorous cultural governance.
