Ousmane Sonko lance l’ECOFEST et appelle à cimenter la CEDEAO par un « marché commun de la créativité africaine »
The Grand Theatre hosted the opening ceremony of the West African Arts and Culture Festival (ECOFEST) on Sunday, November 30, a major event dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of West African artistic and cultural heritage.
Representing the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko took the floor to emphasize the importance of this event, describing it as "a great moment of sharing, exchange and artistic generosity".
The Prime Minister emphasized that this festival, beyond celebrating cultural heritage, is an opportunity to reflect on shared challenges. He warned of the "unprecedented pressures" and "hegemony of certain external models that threaten the identity of our peoples."
Emphasizing the central role of culture in integration, Ousmane Sonko stated: "These cultural mechanisms remind us of a fundamental truth: cultural integration is the lasting foundation. It is on this principle that ECOWAS was created. Current geopolitical events remind us that no achievement is eternal if it is not cemented by culture."
Ousmane Sonko presented Senegal's vision for the cultural sector, which is to transform it into a pillar of economic and social development. He praised the "contemporary creativity that fascinates the world" and the fact that West African artists, filmmakers, and video game developers are "conquering the globe."
With this in mind, he made a passionate appeal for the creation of a common market for African creativity, urging: facilitating the movement of artists and works, protecting copyright, and investing massively to support the sector.
The objective is clear: "We must offer young people reasons to hope, to create and to flourish here, through the equitable development of our territories."
The Prime Minister concluded by congratulating the organizers and the authorities in charge of Culture, encouraging the Senegalese public to embrace ECOFEST, because "culture is the shortest path from one people to another."
