Polémique autour de l'oeuvre de Pape Ibra Tall : La mairie de Thiès apporte des éclaircissements
Following the reactions of Thiessois and the Minister of Culture Amadou Ba on the destruction of the mural created by the late Pape Ibra Tall in Thiès, the information and communication department of the Thiès town hall provided explanations.
"The City of Thiès informs the public that the emblematic mural located in Place de France, a work by the great master of visual arts Pape Ibra Tall, is the subject of a carefully supervised rehabilitation operation, part of the vast program for the renovation and requalification of this historic urban space. This intervention is part of an approach to safeguarding, transmitting and promoting the national artistic heritage," the note reads.
The town hall announces that this operation is being conducted by the Senegalese Manufactures of Decorative Arts (MSAD) of Thiès, a leading institution recognized for its expertise in the creation, conservation and restoration of major works of art from Senegal.
"Before any action, in-depth technical, artistic and heritage studies were carried out by specialized teams from MSAD, in a spirit of scientific rigor and aesthetic fidelity," she affirms.
According to the communications unit, this work aims for a complete restoration of the fresco, in strict respect of the original work, its meaning, its symbolism and the artistic legacy of its author.
"A foundational work of the public space of Thiès, this fresco constitutes a strong identity marker, deeply inscribed in the collective memory of the people. It testifies to the major contribution of Pape Ibra Tall to the history of Senegalese art and to the cultural vocation of the City of Thiès," she confides.
Through this rehabilitation, the town hall reaffirms its commitment to reconciling urban modernization and respect for history, placing culture, memory and heritage at the heart of public action.
"The renovation of Place de France is intended to be an inclusive project, respectful of artistic heritage and meaningful for present and future generations. The City of Thiès wishes to reassure all residents, artists and cultural stakeholders: Pape Ibra Tall's work will be fully restored, enhanced and brought back into focus at the end of the current works," it assures.

Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Dali,… Et si tous ces artistes mondialement connus, dont la moindre production se vend à coups de millions de dollars, étaient sénégalais est-ce qu’ils auraient autant de valeur aujourd’hui ?
Bien sûr, il y a leur œuvre mais c’est surtout ce que leur société en a fait qui leur vaut cette notoriété posthume. À l’échelle du Sénégal, Pape Ibra Tall peut s’inviter à la table de tous ces artistes de talent. Oui, mais le Sénégal est un drôle de pays avec une population qui réclame une mémoire et qui fait tout pour effacer cette dite mémoire.
Quand cette fresque a été créée, j’étais à l’école primaire dans cette ville qui est mienne. Ce monument était le bien commun aux thiessois et nous en étions fiers. La dernière fois que je suis passé devant après 40 ans d’absence, il a fallu que je me faufile entre moulte obstacles qui le cachaient comme un rebus pour finir de constater son état peu luisant. Quand je pense qu’on veut écrire notre Histoire alors qu’on donne aux monuments qui en témoignent moins de valeur qu’aux vespasiennes…. Il y a au moins une chose qui me rassure : on pourra tout faire disparaitre dans cette ville qui m’est chère mais son nom traversera le temps dévolu aux humains qui l’habitent. Et quand je serai dans l’au-delà, chaque fois qu’il en arrivera un nouveau qui dira qu’il vient de Thiès, j’aurai un frisson de fierté et je lui demanderai : «Alors, domou n’dèye, est-ce que tu as l’impression de changer de paradis ? ».
