Thiès : Cri de détresse des ferrailleurs du Sénégal
A protest march is planned for next week in Thiès to denounce the "organized mafia" that is plaguing the scrap metal sector in Senegal. This is the resolution adopted by the National Association of Scrap Metal Dealers of Senegal. It plans to submit an authorization to the administrative authority in the coming hours.
During a press briefing held this Sunday, September 7, 2025 in Thiès, the president of the scrap metal dealers of Senegal, Mame Kane, and her comrades denounced their "wrongful abandonment by the State, for having left us in the hands of a certain 'mafia' made up of corrupt industrialists who squeeze us like lemons, to the detriment of the economic development of the country."
The consequence is that, laments Cheikh Yally, a member of the association, "many of us have closed our businesses, unable to honor our commitments to our employees, all of whom are family members and have been sent into unemployment."
Yet, he says, "we have created a lot of jobs with our small and medium-sized scrap metal companies. Unfortunately, today the sector is in its death throes."
The National Association of Scrap Metal Dealers of Senegal points the finger at the "supervisory ministry, which has not taken the trouble to properly inquire into the situation prevailing in the sector in order to get a handle on the reality on the ground." Mame Kane is particularly offended by "the hell that scrap metal dealers in Senegal are going through, due to malicious practices carried out by manipulators and influencers who only manage crypto-personal interests."
