Concours général : cinq choses à savoir sur une compétition aux principes stricts
In an interview with Le Soleil, Brigitte Ndour, head of the Partnership division of the Directorate of General Secondary Education at the Ministry of National Education, sheds light on the organizational conditions and criteria of this celebration of academic excellence.
1. Launch
The Concours général (General Competition) rewards the best students in the penultimate and final years of secondary school each year in the various subjects of general secondary education. It is 65 years old; the decree establishing it was issued on May 30, 1961.
2. Guardianship
The competition is organised by the Ministry of National Education. But while the Directorate of General Secondary Education (DEMSG) of said department, through the Partnership, Communication, Promotion of Excellence and Documentation division, provides administrative management, the pedagogical organisation falls to the Baccalaureate Office.
3. Notes
To be eligible for the Concours Général, a candidate must not have repeated any grade. They must have an overall average of at least 12/20 and achieve a score of 14/20 or higher in their chosen subject. This year, candidates competed in thirty-three subjects.
4. Distinctions
The Concours Général offers five levels of distinction, for scores ranging from 16/20 to 12/20. The highest score awards first prize, while the lowest awards second prize. Between the top and bottom scores are second prize (15/20 and above), third prize (14/20 and above), and first prize (13/20 and above).
5. Ameth Babou
After winning a prize in the General Competition, a laureate can aspire to the title of best student in Senegal. That's a whole different ball game: to be crowned, one must accumulate several distinctions, including at least one first or second prize. For 2026, Ameth Babou from the Military Academy met the criteria. "He distinguished himself thanks to an exceptional performance with four distinctions, all crowned with a first prize," enthuses Brigitte Ndour, head of the Partnership Division at the DEMSG (Directorate of Military Education and Sport).
