Fausses allégations : Annonce d'une plainte contre le maire de Thiès Dr Babacar Diop pour diffamation
The controversy is growing in the town with two train stations, following a measure taken by the Mayor of Thiès, as part of road infrastructure works to ease traffic flow and facilitate access to the toll motorway. Dr. Babacar Diop has decided to demolish one of Thiès' largest restaurants, "Kawsara," located on the strategic axis of Caen Avenue, not far from the El Hadji Malick Sy high school, to create a major intersection.
According to the mayor, beyond the objective of completing the new road linking the city to the toll motorway, this decision also responds to a road safety imperative. He explains that the presence of the restaurant on this road creates a lack of visibility, which is the cause of numerous traffic accidents.
The city hall services also indicated: this project of the State of Senegal, in perfect coherence with the development program of Avenue Caen initiated by Mayor Babacar Diop, is part of a logic of general interest: facilitating urban mobility, relieving congestion in the area and reducing the risk of accidents for road users. Today, they regret, the delay in relocating the "Kawsara" restaurant has slowed down the work on the roundabout.
But for his part, the administrative manager of the establishment, Ahmadou Ndiaye, denounced "false allegations from the mayor, unfounded remarks," and announced a complaint against Dr. Babacar Diop for "defamation." The owner of the company, Mame Cheikh Ndoye, pointed out that his company employs around forty family managers and supports numerous social initiatives, particularly the care of people with serious illnesses. They said they were open to dialogue and ready to leave the premises in "the general interest of Thiès and the people of Thiès."
The company's managers demand that procedures be respected and dismiss out of hand any statement that suggests that "we are the ones slowing down the work to build this bypass, initiated in 2018 by the Senegalese government." They point out that with the economic crisis and the unemployment problem, there are rules to follow to close the company, which unfortunately has not been done.
This is an opportunity for the National Union of Business Owners of Senegal (UNPES) to express its deep concern about the threat of expropriation of this company by Mayor Babacar Diop. "Beyond the establishment, nearly forty employees and their families risk suddenly finding themselves in a situation of unemployment and precariousness," laments its president, Magueye Badiane. He believes that in a still fragile national economic context in the midst of reconstruction, such decisions run counter to collective efforts to preserve employment and support the private sector.
