Électricité, santé… : le front social se durcit
July is shaping up to be a particularly tense month on the social front. Les Échos points out that, in addition to the general strike announced by the Trade Union Front for the Defense of Labor on July 10, several strategic sectors are also threatening to stop work. The Alliance of Autonomous Health Unions and Gueusseum is leading the way with a 48-hour strike, planned for July 9 and 10, to demand greater social justice and respect for workers' rights.
Tensions are also running high at Senelec, the national electricity company. The Senelec Workers' Union Convergence (CSTS), meeting to define an action plan, is threatening a general strike due to the delayed payment of an annual bonus of between 500,000 and 800,000 CFA francs per employee. The union members are directly appealing to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, arguing that a strike could cause serious disruptions to the electricity supply.
According to the same source, these sectoral movements come on top of the national general strike planned for July 10, raising fears of a major paralysis of several sectors of activity.
