Sénégal : Pape Guèye affiche sa fierté à l’idée de défier les Bleus
It feels like déjà vu. More than twenty years after the historic duel of 2002, during the World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Senegal will meet the French team again, in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Invited to RMC, the Lions' midfielder, Pape Guèye (26 years old, 34 caps, 3 goals), did not hide his enthusiasm at the idea of facing the 2018 world champions.
“It’s a very special match. We expected to qualify, but not necessarily to draw France. For me, it’s a great source of pride. I was born in France. So, it will be a special moment,” said the former Olympique de Marseille player, now at Villarreal in Spain.
Pape Guèye also recalled the importance of the 2002 epic in the collective memory of Senegal: "The 2002 match was huge. We were young, but we all know what that victory represented for the country."
As a reminder, in their first World Cup encounter, Senegal caused a sensation by defeating France 1-0, who were subsequently eliminated in the group stage. It's a memory the Lions would like to relive in 2026 in North America.
