Hommage : Jimi Mbaye, un an après, l'écho éternel d'un guitariste de légende
One year to the day, Senegal remembers the loss of its illustrious guitarist and musician, an iconic member of the legendary Super Étoile de Dakar. Jimi Mbaye was not only a talented instrumentalist, but an essential figure in the Senegalese music scene. Alongside his comrade-in-arms Youssou Ndour, he co-wrote and recorded global hits that continue to resonate and thrill music lovers to this day.
Born Mamadou Mbaye in 1957 in Dakar, affectionately known as "Jimi," he came from a long line of griots (traditional West African storytellers and musicians). The grandson of Oumy Seck and great-grandson of Massata Seck, he carried within him the legacy of a centuries-old tradition, which he brilliantly modernized. A songwriter, arranger, producer, and occasional singer, he was internationally renowned for his creativity and exceptional virtuosity.
His unique technique, capable of making his guitar weep or giving it the sounds of a xalam, commanded the admiration of both the general public and his fellow guitarists around the world. Twelve months after his passing, his sonic imprint remains indelible in the history of Mbalax and contemporary African music.
